County and Local Developer Work to Bring Water Park to Dilworth

Latta Park may be getting a big new addition. A local developer is working with County officials and the Great Wolf Lodge to build a 24 acre waterpark, hotel and mixed-use development on the 31 acre park site.

The project will need a rezoning and they are looking to move quickly to reach approval before the City’s summer break.

The Dilworth Community Association spoke out against the project on Thursday morning citing “size, scale and massing” as well as a lack of consistency with the Dilworth Small Area Plan. “We’ve been consistently against the project”, stated one board member. “The wave cave is definitely too close to the street frontage. Why wouldn’t they just move the slide funnel to the Dilworth Rd side and the Lazy River onto Romany?”

Jon Piper of Kingston Ave is in support of the project: “It’s a David vs. Goliath story. The Community Association is Goliath and my kid is David just tryin’ to go down the lazy river while his dad has a cocktail without driving to Concord.”

City officials were unavailable for comment, but one member spoke off the record stating “if there’s one thing I know, it’s don’t stand between district 1 and a recreational water project.”
