Phoenix Mercury 2020 Season Outlook

By George Kallis

Previous Season Outlook:

They enter last season as a title favorite because they were an epic game short of reaching the WNBA finals. Everyone including myself they would at least be in the title conversation. That never happen because Diana Taurasi was hurt or out for most of the season, some of there vets took a step back, and just never click. They made the playoffs and got blown out by Chicago after Brittany Grinner got hurt and didn’t play much in second half.

Offseason Overview:

Add:

Skylar Diggins-Smith (Sign and Trade via DALLAS) PG

Bria Hartley (UFA, NYL) Wing

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Trade, NYL via WASH) G

Jessica Breland (Trade, ATL) PF (Covid 19 concerns with her having cancer before)

Nia Coffey (Trade, ATL) F

Kia Vaugn (UFA) C

Lost/Sit Out:

Yvonne Turner (RFA Resign then got injured overseas) G

DeWanna Bonner (Sign and Trade via CONN) F

Briann January (Traded to CONN) G

Leilani Mitchell (UFA to WASH) PG

Essence Carson (UFA to WASH) SF

Camille Little (Retire) Big

Sancho Lyttle (Retire) Big

Jessica Breland PF (Covid 19 concerns with her having cancer before)

Roster Outlook:

Skylar Diggins-Smith PG

Bria Hartley Wing

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough G

Nia Coffey SF

Kia Vaugn C

Brittany Grinner C

Diana Taurasi G

Sophie Cummingham G

Alanna Smith PF

Brianna Turner C

Breakout Candidate: Alana Smith:

Before the Breland I wasn’t to sure who would be the one to breakout. With Breland departure for good reason this give the second year player Smith. I’m still a big believer in Smith as she can shoot and defend really well. The extra spacing will be good for there new big three and smith will take advantage of great players around her.

This Season Preview:

This one is pretty hard to figure out since they overhaul a roster with more young talent but with COVID the season will be only 22 games and have a shorten training camp. I feel like they will be a playoff team but can they gel will be the question.
