Evolutionary Mismatch

Exploring the Misalignment between Our Modern Environment and Our Evolved Psychology:

Evolutionary mismatch refers to the concept that the human body and psychology evolved to thrive in certain environmental conditions that differ from the modern world we live in today. This makes it more difficult to go by every day life (as we don’t have the same threats that we faced long time ago) and our bodily reaction has already adapted to evolutionary adaption to survive. However, we as humans (generally speaking) don’t really require to “survive”, thus the bodily reaction and response is excessively used and this harms our physiological and psychological organism.

Another implication of the evolutionary mismatch of psychological mismatch, our brains and psychology have developed in different social and environment context. Psychological mismatch can occur in many circumstances; such as our instincts and cognitive bias that used to pose useful to us as it navigated us during ancestral time for survival and social interactions. However, this might not align with modern’s lifestyle as we generally don’t really require an active stress response to threats. This causes a psychological mismatch between the adapted brain and the societal context. Therefore, the adapted stress response for short-term physical threats, may be triggered by chronic psychological stressors. Also, our ancestral food preferences and hunger cues may not be well-matched with the abundance and accessibility of high-calorie, processed foods in the present. This psychological mismatch causes psychological implications as it may contribute to stress, depression, anxiety, addiction and more psychological disorders. Additionally, it can impact our decision-making processes, leading to biases and irrational behaviors in domains such as risk assessment, mate selection, and resource allocation.
