What is good writing?

Society values writing because it presents an opportunity for individuals to express ideas that they personally discover through their own life. Writing allows other people to share in the events experienced by that person and relate to the lessons learned.

Because of modern media platforms, any person now has the ability to write for the public eye.

So with a multitude of people writing and posting whatever they want to, what differentiates a writer from a good writer?

When we think of good writers, we probably think of authors like Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, or Mark Twain. Yet most people would agree that while these authors are among the greats, their ability to use grammar correctly is not what gave them that position.

A good book, article, or blog post ideally includes two elements; an idea worth hearing and writing that keeps the reader engaged. Together, these two elements create a piece that is crafted to flow in a way that clearly expresses the point and carries the reader on a journey.

Writers typically come in two forms. Some specialize in being good storytellers — they know how to relay their experiences or topics yet lack the skill to do it well. Conversely, some writers are experts at crafting sentences and using words to form a beautifully composed work. However, they have nothing interesting to say.

Good writers learn to say something worth saying with intentionality and skill.
