The Little Things That Make Us Content

Grandpa made beef stew today! Grandpa has been an expert beef stew maker for more than 40 years. Grandpa started making beef stew when he took over the cooking torch from Grandma. Grandma cooked until Beloved’s sister went off to University. From that point onward, all cooking was done by Grandpa. The only thing about Grandpa’s cooking is that he had a very limited set of dishes that he prepared, beef stew being one of his featured cuisines. Grandpa also liked collecting delicacies-from the farmers market, from the Japanese bakery shop, from his daily shopping trips to the grocery store.

Grandpa hasn’t cooked so much in the last three years. He has made little things like heating Campbell’s Hearty Vegetable Soup, but you have to keep an eagle eye on him, least he forget to turn off the flame under the pot.

Today, however, he made a delicious beef stew start to stop. It began with him helping me chop potatoes and peel carrots. It was as if his muscle memory got his brain memory going, and before I knew it a pile of uniformly cut vegetables was waiting just as I was about to start sautéing onions. Grandpa insisted he could take over, and before in no time, with me as sous-chef, an aromatic beef stew was slipping into the preheated oven.

Dinner, which Grandpa was well enough to stay for — was a celebratory affair! We all thought that Grandpa had outdone himself, and that his beef stew had never tasted so good. Grandpa soaked up the praise, quite chuffed. After dinner, we were even able to play a quick Scrabble game, with words being placed on the board, and not in the box top.

I am happy tonight. The boys are at their homework promptly without being asked twice; the dishes are clean; the counter sparkles; it is only just gone 7:00. Relaxing in an armchair, I sip chamomile tea while listening to Grandpa’s classical music quietly soaring. Sometimes it is the little things that makes us most content.
