You probably know what an earthquake is right? And you probably know what a book is. But have you heard of a quake book?

A quake book is a book that causes an earthquake (inside of you). It is a book that shakes you, changes you and moves you forward. I’ve read quite a few books and only like 6 of them is what I define a “quake book”.

I read a quake book very recently. It is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It is outstanding. This guy was the most powerful man on earth (emperor of Rome) and he wrote a diary and it got published centuries later (he thought his writings would be burned). I think it it is one of the greatest books of all time. It’s just rare to see the thoughts of a man of his stature talking about justice, temptation, self-improvement, and not having sex with his slaves. It is the definitive text on self-discipline, personal ethics, humility, self-actualization, and strength. If you read it and aren’t profoundly changed by it, it’s probably because as Aurelius says

But yeah go read that book.

There’s one passage that stuck to me that I wanted to write about. Where he talks about bees. Here it is:

After I read that, I read it again 4 more times and then I copied into my google docs and printed it and now it is scotch taped, stuck on my wall. I have this fight with myself every morning to get up and do what I’m supposed to do and sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. But as I walk over to my alarm clock, I see the passage of Marcus Aurelius targeting inside my pupils. It gives me extra punching strength so I can knock out drowsiness and laziness to the canvas. If I side with Marcus, I’ve won the first minute of my day, and that makes it easier for me to win the morning, then eventually the day. It’s like the snowball effect. It just takes one punch to get rolling and win the whole fight. So answer Marcus’s question:
