Reading Right Leaning News Reports for the First Time

To be quite honest with you, I don’t read the news. I rely on this very amazing filtration system known as twitter. If it’s an important piece of news, it will make its way onto my feed.

Even though I don’t go out of my way to read news headlines, I’m very aware of the bias that exists in my online bubble. Most of the people I follow and the people they follow are very left-leaning. For a while, once Trump was elected and I started hearing about the different racist opinions people had, I was shocked! It was hard to believe that any other opinions other than the ones my direct circle of people had existed. Which can only explain to you the even bigger shock I had when I decided to read some news headlines from right-leaning news sources.

I decided to look at Fox News first. Out of all the news outlets out there, Fox News is the most well known for its blatant biases. However, it also is the most subtle with their political views. If you were unaware of their political sway, you would be easily manipulated into believing a lot of their news stories. After reading a couple of their news stories, I had to laugh to myself. Some of the language and terminology used seems to always have a negative connotation towards Democrats and specifically Bernie Sanders. Although reading Fox News instead of my regular twitter feed should’ve changed my view of the world temporarily but it did no such thing. Being aware of the bais allowed me to take the info I read with a grain of salt; Almost like reading a fictional story.

I also read some of The Blaze’s new stories. This was my first time hearing and reading anything by this news source. Just like Fox News, a lot the headlines we’re worded to reflect a specific ideology. It also goes down to the news chosen to be reported. Unlike twitter, filtration is a lot more driven by an agenda rather than an algorithm. Similar to Fox News, reading these stories did not change my views on anything. However, it did create awareness of how media can be used to sway an audience.

This exercise, although simple, was very effective. To be very honest with you again. I was expecting some big revelation to come along with reading the right-leaning news, but it never did. It was probably my hyperawareness of the people writing the articles that stopped me from taking anything I read seriously. Albeit, it did burst my bubble of comfort online and allowed me to be more aware of the rest of the world. Being caught up in the madness and algorithms of twitter can be very dangerous, but looking at these different news sources opened my eye to a different realm of reality that I wasn’t aware of and didn’t care to interact with. I’m glad I took this small step out of my comfort zone to expand my bubble and ultimately be more alert of its existence.
