Man Convicted of Burying Busload of Children Alive in 1976 Considered For Parole

It has been determined that Frederick Woods is “no longer a danger to society”

Frederick Woods is the only suspect still in prison after the 1976 case in which children from a school bus were kidnapped, transferred to a moving truck, and buried in the ground.

Woods, along with James Schoenfeld, and Richard Schoenfeld were captured, found guilty of kidnapping for ransom, robbery, and inflicting bodily harm, and were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Later factors gave them the possibility of being able to see the light of day again.

It has been determined by parole commissioners that after 17 denied paroles, Frederick Woods is no longer a danger to society and should be released. His co-conspirators, brothers James Schoenfeld and Richard Schoenfeld, were paroled in 2015 and 2012, respectively.

Parents in Chowchilla, California experienced every parent’s worse nightmare on July 15, 1976. That day, their children hopped on the school bus to travel to a swimming pool for a summer trip. That afternoon, however, the bus did not show back up and the children did not return home.

About 150 miles west of San Francisco, bus driver, Ed Ray, was driving the rowdy group of kids home after their trip to the Chowchilla fairgrounds. They were still excited about going to the swimming pool on a hot, California day. Just what you’d expect for kids their age on a summer day in the 70s. None of them could have imagined that three men would soon change their lives forever.

Around 4 p.m. Ray made a couple of stops, letting children off the bus. He turned onto Avenue 21 to head to his next drop-off. However, there was a white 1971 Dodge van parked in the middle of the road, blocking his path. He attempted to maneuver the bus around the vehicle, but a man jumped in front of the bus. Wearing overalls, pantyhose over his face, and brandishing a revolver, the man walked to the driver’s side window and asked Ed, “Would you open the door, please?” Ed did as he was asked.
