Broken Silence

For years we stood side by side, going through the motions. We knew something was wrong, but we failed to utter a word. To tell one another of our pains, because we were sick of complaining. We were sick to our stomachs of the injustices served to us as our daily meals. Yet, we stayed silent not out of choice, but because we felt that we didn’t have a voice to claim our basic human rights.

We were pushed down, denied, rejected. We were fed lies to keep us in line. We were manipulated, coerced, and made to believe that the seeds we sow can only bear the fruits of sectarianism, divide, hopelessness, and mediocrity. What we were not told, and what we are realizing today, is that we not only have a choice but a voice so powerful it has reverberated throughout our country.

We are showing the world, our false representatives in a corrupt government, and most importantly ourselves and our fellow brothers and sisters, that we are one. The truth that you all have taught me is that we hold in our hands the seeds of progress, equality, love, acceptance, and unity.

Today, we are still standing side by side, however, we are no longer silent. The silence has been broken, and the voice of the people, our voice, shall usher us into a future we have dreamed of for so long.
