Day 820

Grammar

I am a grammar nerd. I always have been. Language has always been an important part of my life. In fact, it’s kind of a family thing.

There is an old joke that is a staple for my family. It goes like this.

A young man from an urban neighborhood get a scholarship to Harvard. He is rough around the edges but brilliant. He arrives on campus and settles in. Early in his first week, he finds himself lost.

He sees a professorial sort of man walking along, bearded and bespectacled, wearing a tweed jacket with suede patches on the elbows, briefcase and papers tucked under his arm. The very least, the guy looks like he knows his way around.

So, the young man calls out: “Hey, um excuse me mister. Can you tell me where the library’s at?”

The man stopped dead in his tracks. Staring solemnly at the young man the older gentleman speaks. “Young man, here at Harvard we do not end sentences in prepositions. Would you care to rephrase the question?“

The young man paused. Then he replied. “Sure. Can you tell me where the library is at, asshole?“

It became a running joke in the family that any time we heard somebody finish a sentence with a preposition we were just look at each other and quietly mouth “asshole”, then burst out laughing.

So the topic of this article was put aside entirely this morning when I saw this.

Today’s Gracious Gratitude. I am grateful for:
