Thinking About Thinking

I enjoyed learning about the study that was done with thinking about thinking. It made me look at my own life and see if I have used thinking about thinking in school. I believe I have used this without realizing it when I have exams or projects. For exams if I plan ahead and research what chapters in my textbook will be covered and I look up videos that could be useful I find I generally feel better about the exam and do better. While a simple idea it truly does work, and it makes sense that it works. Thinking about thinking means you are putting intent behind your thoughts. Without realizing you have made a plan of attack and you act on that plan. Intent is everything. When you are active in your plan to study, you are actually having to concentrate and think. For instance, a big problem I run into when it comes to taking in information is when I am in a lecture. Lectures are long and can be boring. I struggle because it can be so easy just to fall asleep or zone out and so while the information is being heard, I listened to any of it. Yet, I have found if I actively try and listen and be interested no matter how boring I can actually retain the information. In one class I had the class was two hours long, so I found myself becoming bored in that second hour. But I learned that I go in with the mind set that this will be interesting and actively listen and ask questions I retain the information much better. I retain the information even better than if I mindlessly take notes because I am intentionally forcing myself to feel interested and to listen to what is actually being said. The words aren’t just going in one ear and out the other, it’s actually locked in. It doesn’t take much to be a better student you just have to be an active learner.
